Principal Update 9-8-17

The 2017-18 school year has begun and Thomas Edison High School is thriving!  Enrollment is climbing every day; currently we are home to 977 young scholars.  We are pleased to have a cohort of students from Northeast Middle School joining us each day for Concert Band and Geometry.  New courses like Broadcast Journalism, LEAF Biology, IB Sports and Exercise Science and Art as a Profession are up and running, building on our mission that “all students will graduate with the skills necessary to excel in their post-secondary aspirations.”

In our first 2 weeks of school, we are focused on teaching our key school-wide expectations.  They are:

  • Professional language: We are all expected to use school-appropriate language at school; staff will support/demonstrate using appropriate language.
  • Passes: With teacher permission, you may use a 2 minute class pass.  Teachers may provide a written Tommie pass if needed.  Passes are not granted during the first or last 10 minutes of class.  All students must always have a pass in the halls and be ready to present it if asked.
  • Cell phones: With teacher permission, you may use cell phones for academic purposes.  If you use a cell phone without permission, you will: 1st-Be reminded to put your phone away; 2nd-Give phone to your teacher until the end of the hour; 3rd-Give your phone to a school Dean until the end of the day.
  • Attendance: Remember that academic success and regular, on time attendance are strongly connected.  In support of your success, you are expected to attend all classes, be on time to every class and remain in class until the end of the hour.

Please check in with your student to ask them how they are doing in regards to understanding and following these school-wide expectations.

We hope that you will regularly check our website and Facebook page to keep up to date on all of the great things happening at Edison.  Our student handbook can be found on the website (it is being reviewed with students in Advisory this week); the website is also home to our 2017-18 calendar and links to teacher pages.

We look forward to continued success at Thomas Edison High School; thank you for choosing Edison!

Welcome Letter August 2017

August 14, 2017

Dear Families of Thomas Edison High School:

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year!

Thursday, August 24th

3:30-7:30pm    11th Annual Eastside Community and School Barbeque at Edison
4:00-6:00pm    Open House—Meet teachers, pick up schedules, visit classrooms, sign up for clubs and activities, and learn how to access parent portal.

Family and friends are welcome to attend the Eastside Community and School Barbeque!

The first day of school is Monday, August 28th; our school day runs from 8:15 am to 3:00 pm. This allows time to provide for a seven period day.  We have built time into the weekly schedule for Advisory to promote academic enrichment by supporting the academic and social-emotional needs of all students.  In addition, I encourage all students and parents to review additional important information on our website http://edison.mpls.k12.mn.us/.

We will continue the use of Go-To Cards, which is a pass for eligible students to use Metro Transit to get to and from school; the cards are active until 10PM to support students who are involved in afterschool Athletics and Activities.  Students who receive Special Education services will continue to receive individualized transportation if needed.

Eligible students can pick up their Metro Transit Go-To Card at Edison on August 24rd from 12PM-5PM in the Edison Gym (across the street from the main building). More information regarding eligibility is available on the MPS website at http://ccr.mpls.k12.mn.us/go-to.  If you have any questions, please contact Jon Ledeboer at 612-466-1602.

We will continue to offer free breakfast & lunch for ALL students (regardless of Free and Reduced lunch eligibility), and our dinner program will begin September 18th.  We still need ALL families to complete a Free and Reduced lunch form, even if you believe your family is not eligible for free lunch. The information is used to collect number of families who may be eligible for assistance. This will help us provide reduced athletic fees, free ACT tests, and college application fee waivers for many of our students; additionally, the 100% confidential information collected from these forms brings more financial support to our school budget.  Pick up a form in the office or complete the form online at www.schoolcafe.com.

The year ahead at Edison promises to be full of great accomplishments and exciting progress for our students and our school.  We are entering our eighth year as a fully certified International Baccalaureate World School, and our sixth year as a fully certified Middle Years International Baccalaureate for grades 9 and 10.

See the enclosed newsletter for more information about upcoming opportunities for our Tommies.  I’m looking forward to seeing you all again soon!

Sincerely,

Eryn Warne, Principalhttp://edison.mpls.k12.mn.us/          www.facebook.com/MPS.Edison.Tommies           twitter.com/mps_edison
