____________
With just a few weeks remaining in the softball and baseball seasons I want to give you all an update related to the difficulty of providing officials. As you are aware, the number of umpires throughout the metro area are at crisis-low levels. In addition, the first three weeks of cancelled games are resulting in attempting to play a full season of games in a compressed few weeks prior to Regions. Rather than having a certain number of teams practicing (rather than playing games) on any given day, it seems every single team at all levels are scheduled to play most every day.
I understand this has been frustrating for players, parents, coaches, and athletic directors. Its been frustrating for the assigners as well. They have always prided themselves on providing officials for all levels of games they are requested to cover. I can say with absolute certainty their inability to deliver is not due to lack of effort. Assigners are spending countless hours trying to get as many games covered as possible.
This year is different. The shortage of umpires along with more games scheduled each day than typical is something we hope never happens again.
In the short term, assigners’ focus is to provide umpires for varsity level games. Then they will work on JV, followed by B squad, followed by C squad. This may result in an umpire assigned a B squad game for the following day, then getting pulled and reassigned to a varsity game on short notice.
I'm telling you this so teams don't feel blindsided when an umpire is assigned to cover a non-varsity game, then gets reassigned. Frankly, the only way to ensure you have an umpire for non-varsity games is for athletic directors/coaches to secure an umpire ourself. Our assigner will strive to cover as many games as possible. They are utilizing every single umpire that is available for every single day.
Lets hope the factors leading to the umpire shortage in 2022 never happen again.
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
