Course Choice Process

What is student choice?

  • Student choice is the time when our students decide what classes they are going to take for the upcoming year.

When is/does student choice happen?

  • Student choice will begin at Edison on 02/20/18

What is the process that will be followed for student choice?

  • Students will be called by grade and last name to come to room 104 during the week(s) of 2/20 through 3/6. These announcements are done each period that we are conducting class choice, over the intercom directly after the final bell.
  • When students arrive, they will be given their current transcript and a choice sheet that aligns with their particular grade.
  • Each student will then meet with a counselor who will do a credit audit and 4-year plan consultation. Following this, the student will complete their choice sheet – indicating core and elective choices.
  • Each student must checkout with a counselor once they’ve completed their choice sheet.
  • Counselors will then enter the student’s choices into the Discovery scheduling matrix.

How does the choice process affect the school/individual teachers?

  • The choice process is the method a school/principal and administrative team uses to determine the number of sections that will be required for each subject area. The “numbers” that are generated will then be used in part to determine scheduling needs for the upcoming school year.
  • Student choice also determines if any newly proposed class will occur.

Why isn’t student choice conducted by class or subject area?

  • It is imperative that ALL of our students be queried in order to get the most accurate numbers/responses possible. We need accurate student choice numbers to staff appropriately and build the best master schedule for Edison High School students.
  • There is NOT one core class in a grade level that would allow us to access all the students in that grade due to SPED, ESL and advanced students.  This thorough process gives Counselors the ability to meet with each student individually to discuss their plans – this serves as a portion of the Counselor’s process/responsibility for creating an ILP for each student.

What can help this process to go more smoothly?

  • The patience and understanding of our educators – this process is disruptive.
  • Assistance from floor staff and teachers – if everyone does their part to listen to the announcement, and make sure the requested student(s) leave the class; Counselors will only need to make the announcement one time.
