The following eight students from our ESL Level I and II reading classes competed on December 15, 2016 in the National Recitation Competition- Poetry Out Loud: Nurto Dubow, Abdirisaq Namhani, Kawther Hassan, Abdi Ahmed, Ahmed Gelle, Kimberly Gomez Erazo, Abshiro Abdimalik, and Laura Moreno Montemiranda
Edison's ESL teacher Cynthia Shaffner is not new to this competition. In 2009-10 she brought students from RCEP in Richfield. When she started at Edison in 2014-15 she presented this same opportunity to our students. Only two representatives from each school can advance to the city-wide competition. Laura
Moreno Montemiranda & Abdirisaq Namhani were selected by guest judges to compete at the Citywide Competition in March.
To prepare students for this competition, ESL teachers Cynthia Shaffner and Alix Olson (Travline) had students practe by reading poems in front of their peers and for many, this was their first opportunity to read in front of an audience on stage.
The winner of the city-wide competition will compete at State and if they qualify, will move up to Nationals to vie for a $50,000 scholarship!
