Grand Opening of the Auditorium and Fall Music Showcase Sets the Tone for Edison's Future Renovations
Wednesday, October 1, 2014 2:10 PM

The renovation to Edison’s auditorium has been in the making for several years. The newly renovated auditorium boasts a complete new sound and lighting system, built in video projector, stage curtains, stage front and floor, new seats and carpet on the main level, and aisle lighting along with many other upgrades including a brand new ceiling.

Last night Edison was able to celebrate its first concert performance, “The Fall Music Showcase” in the newly renovated auditorium. Collaboration with the MPS District, community, students, parents and staff brought this project to fruition.  Principal Carla Steinbach acknowledged several different members from these groups; Associate Superintendent Cecilia Saddler, Area A Board Member Jenny Arneson, Northeast Chamber of Commerce,  K-12 Art Content Lead Calvin Keasling,  Construction Coordinator Andy Lesch, Facility Design Manager Clyde Kane, Chuck Dibble from Morris Park Players, Friends of Thomas Edison High School Theater and President-Chris Pratt, Edison’s Theater Director and IB Diploma Programme Coordinator Max Athorn, Edison’s music teacher Stacey Athorn, Karl Reinhard (previous Edison teacher and theater technician), and students.

Recognition was also given to the following MPS contractors: Wendel, Hallberg Engineering, Morcon, Hunt Electric, Edi, Gopher Stage, VSI and Norcostco.

The evening started out with light refreshments and conversations with members from the community, MPS district office, families, students and staff. We had over a 150 people attend this event and when it came time to cut the ribbon, everyone was cheering! Music performances included student members from Concert Band, Varsity Choir, Men’s and Women’s Concert Choirs and IB music students.  Click here to view auditorium unveiling

Principal Carla Steinbach shared information about the recent campus improvements:

• softball backstop
• electronic sign
• art sculpture pieces including the lights in the parking lot
• solar panels

Principal Steinbach thanked MPS district, Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, Holland Neighborhood Association, Minneapolis Public Works Department, Minneapolis Park Board, MN Vikings, and Edison’s Green Council for teaming together to make this dream a reality.

We look forward to having the auditorium enjoyed by many. Morris Park Players will have their first performance of “Shrek The Musical” on Friday, October 24th at 7:30 p.m.
