Jada Lewis Named as Edison's 2017 Athena Award Winner

Senior, Jada Lewis is Edison’s 2017 Athena Award winner. She is best known for winning 3 state track team titles: 2 first place and 1 second place. Jada joined Edison’s track team as an 8th grader and has won 12 conference and section awards, served as the team captain for one season, named as the Most Valuable Player and earned 5 varsity letters.  
 
Jada played on the Varsity Girls’ Basketball team all four years and was the captain for two years. This year, she led her team to 20 wins!  
 
Jada is a natural leader. As a student ambassador, she welcomes new students on their first day of school and helps them with finding their classes and locker. Jada is also a member of the Black Student Leadership Council, Avid Sight Team, National Honor Society and was selected to be on Edison’s student wall of honor.  
 
Jada was one of seven Minneapolis Public Schools’ students selected to join Project Success in the opening of the new 19th Smithsonian museum – the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Jada enjoys giving back to the community and finds time in her busy schedule to volunteer at a nursing home. She is a member of the Eagles Wing Track Club and assists younger runners with developing track skill. 
 
This fall, Jada will attend Augsburg College (change from Iowa State) as a full time student and is a recipient of the ACT Six Leadership Scholarship. She plans to seek a secondary education degree in social studies and aspires to return to Edison as a history teacher.
