Metro Transit Changes
Thursday, June 9, 2022 9:55 AM
August 2022 Recommended Route Changes
Route 46
Change description:
-
Discontinue the current limited service past Washburn. The primary Route 46 alignment is moving from Bryant to Lyndale, about 1/3 mi from Washburn, students will walk to Lyndale/50th
-
The extra PM trip currently staged at Washburn will be repurposed to start at Southwest to provide additional travel options there, responding to CDD boundary changes and ridership growth.
Rationale:
-
Results in a consistent travel pattern for all Route 46 trips
-
Fewer buses traveling through congested 49th/Wentworth area in the PM (conflicts with parent pickup)
-
Washburn student ridership is relatively low; CDD boundary changes mean most Washburn students along Route 46 are in the walk zone
-
The move to Lyndale results in a reasonable walk distance
-
a similar number of students currently walk further to/from Route 4 on Bryant
-
comparable to the current walk to Route 18 on Nicollet (46 students in Spring 2022)
Student impact:
-
A total of around 21 students (spring 2022 ridership) will have a longer walk (15 from the east, 6 from the west). Students from the east have the option to transfer to/from Route 11 to get closer to school
-
Pre-COVID ridership (Fall 2019) was about 22 AM/38 PM students from the east, <5 from the west
-
Fall 2015 ridership was about 45 AM/35 PM from the east, <5 from the west
Route 32
Change description:
-
Eliminate limited-service branches via Lyndale (32D) and Plymouth/Broadway (32E)
-
Instead, time reliable transfers with 22A, C Line, Route 5 trips
-
Terminate AM extras at Lowry/Central
Rationale:
-
Ridership on these branches has declined significantly, expected to continue with CDD changes
-
Ridership no longer reaches our informal threshold for special branches
-
By streamlining the branches, we can more easily “right-size” the service on the main Lowry alignment as ridership changes continue with CDD transition
-
Deviating morning trips to Edison is inconsistent with how we serve other high schools
-
For example, SWHS students riding Route 6 walk from Xerxes or France to the building in the AM
Student impact:
-
D branch riders will transfer between Route 22 and 32
-
~25 students in spring 2022
-
42 AM/29 PM in Fall 2019
-
55 AM/28 PM in Fall 2015
-
E branch riders will transfer between C Line or Route 5 and 32
-
~21 students in spring 2022
-
43 AM/32 PM in Fall 2019
-
42 AM/25 PM in Fall 2015
-
PM trip has not operated since mid-April, with no feedback to Metro Transit
-
In the AM, 81 students will have a walk introduced from Lowry to the school building – 20 students already walking/using regular trips before and after the extra
